Structure

Properties

Appearance    (1), colorless to pale yellow oily liquid. At low temperatures, crystal.

Odor    special odor.

Solubility    insoluble in water. soluble in ethyl ether.

Stability    stable. Easily oxidized.

Risk    Liquid form: flammable material; irritation, irritation to skin, eye, respiratory system. Harmful products of combustion are CO, CO2 and so on. Contact with strong oxidants, can cause to burn.

Synthesis

(1), Castor oil reacts with methanol by transesterification, obtain castor oil methyl ester;

(2), Through pyrolysis, castor oil methyl ester is converted to methyl undecylenate;

(3), Through saponification and acidification, methyl undecylenate is converted to undecylenic acid.
